Take a cable car through the valley, where you’re bound to spot wildlife, including Arabian tigers. If it’s an adventure you’re looking for, hike through the Soudah mountains in Abha and journey back in time to when Bedouins travelled the mountains of Asir.
You can also explore Rijal Almaa, a village located in the Asir Region, which is more than 900 years old. On to the coastal beauty that is Historic Jeddah, where you can wander through the streets of the UNESCO World Heritage site and take in the incredible architecture as you sip on some almond coffee. - Embrace local traditions and make the most of the warm Saudi Welcome:It’s always good to get a feel for the local culture before you head to a new destination. Hospitality is an important component of Saudi culture. It’s common to be invited for a cup (or several!) of coffee, even if you’re meeting the person for the first time. English is widely spoken in Saudi. However, a few basic Arabic words — Marhaba (welcome), and Shukran (thanks) — will get you far. In smaller cities, Google Translate is your best friend!
- Getting aroundUber and Careem (a popular ridesharing app in the region) are affordable and convenient ways to get around. Metered taxis (which are green, by the way!) are also available outside most airports, stations, and major shopping areas. Intercity buses are an economical option too and they run frequently.
All of the above are available via cash, card or contactless payments. If you’re planning on getting behind the wheel, you can easily rent a car with companies such as Hertz, Budget or Avis. All you need is a valid international driver’s licence, your passport and visa documents, a payment method, and a contact number.
- The little details that make all the difference
Finally, here are a few logistical pro tips to make your visit seamless and carefree. The main network carriers in Saudi are STC, Mobily and Zain, all three of which have booths set up in the arrival halls in the Jeddah and Riyadh airports. There are multiple currency exchange booths and ATMs available at the airport on arrival. It’s also important to note that almost all stores in Saudi accept cards, however, having some cash on hand is great just in case.
