Chinese officials seized a Taiwanese fishing boat near a Taiwan-controlled island on July 2 and took it to a Chinese port, amid escalating tensions. The squid fishing boat was near the Taiwan-administered Kinmen islands, which sit next to the Chinese cities of Xiamen and Quanzhou. The Taiwanese boat was operating during China’s no-fishing period, the coast guard said. Taiwanese Coast guard sought explanation and asked China to release the fishing boats.
