Muhammad Yunus announced on Monday that the general elections in Bangladesh will be held late next year or early in 2026.
Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus on Monday said that the general elections in the country will be held in late 2025 or early 2026.
Yunus heads, the chief adviser to the caretaker government that was put in place after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power by a violent students’ protest in August this year.
“Election dates could be fixed by the end of 2025 or the first half of 2026,” Yunus told the state television.
Yunus is under mounting pressure to set the date for the elections.
Sheikh Hasina, earlier this year, fled to India as thousands of protestors stormed the Prime Minister’s Palace in Dhaka in August.
Hasina’s government was earlier accused of politicising courts and civil service and also staging lopsided elections. She was also accused of mass detention and extrajudicial killings of her political opponents during her 15-year rule in Bangladesh.
Yunus said that he has stressed on the need for reforms before the conduct of the elections. “If the political parties agree to hold the election on an earlier date with minimum reforms, such as having a flawless voter list, the election could be held by the end of November,” he said.
He added that the inclusion of a full list of electoral reforms would cause a delay in the elections by a few months.
The last general elections in Bangladesh were held on January 7, 2024, in which Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League secured a fourth consecutive victory.
