Indian challenger D Gukesh will head into the seventh instalment of the World Chess Championship 2024 Finals against Ding Liren in Singapore on Tuesday, with the match poised well in the balance at 3 points each.
The players resume their encounter after a day’s break following the sixth game, which ended in a draw after an extended bout between the finalists, who stand inseparable at the moment.
The 14-game series was off to a flyer as Liren, who was playing against the odds despite being the holder due to a slump in form in the past year, came up with a combination to take the lead against the Indian teenager.
The second game ended in a draw before Gukesh clawed his way back in the third game as he dug out his first win after Liren ran the clock out before his 40th move.
The fourth and fifth games ended in a draw and as did the most recent sixth iteration of the match as the champion and challenger shook hands for a draw.
How Will The Title Be Decided?
For a player to be crowned the champion, one would need a total of 7.5 games from the total of 14 games. A win results in one point, a draw grants 0.5 and a loss is 0 points respectively. If the match ends in a tie after all 14 games, a tiebreak will be held the following day to determine the winner.
This year’s tournament marks the first time in 138 years that two Asian players will be pitted against each other in the high-profile encounter, with a promise of of USD 2.5 million going to the victor.
