D Gukesh Vs Ding Liren, World Chess Championship, Game 2 LIVE:
Welcome to our live coverage of Game 2 between Ding Liren and D Gukesh at the World Chess Championship in Singapore!
Ding Liren got his World Chess Championship title defence underway in style as he scripted a win coming back from a position of disadvantage against Indian challenger D Gukesh in the first board of the final of the event in Singapore on Monday.
With his win, Liren took a 1-0 lead over Gukesh in the championship.
In Game 1, Liren seemed to be struggling during the initial phase of the game only to turn the tables on his Indian counterpart midgame before Gukesh resigned the opening board.
Gukesh, who was put under pressure both on the board and on the clock, survived the race against time, but was left battered as Liren capitalised on the scenario he had cultivated to put the Indian teen under threat.
The majority of the chess world is rooting for the 18-year-old in-form Indian, who already displays the poise of a champion. What remains to be seen is how he handles the pressure of the big occasion during the fortnight-long showpiece. Can Gukesh fight his way back and tie it up 1-1 today?
How Will The Champion Be Decided Ultimately?
A total of 7.5 points, from across 14 games, are required for either player to claim the championship. A win garners 1 point, a loss equates to 0, while a draw shall reward both players with 0.5 points each. If the match ends in a tie after all 14 games, a tiebreak will be held the following day to determine the winner.
This year’s tournament marks the first time in 138 years that two Asian players will be pitted against each other in the marquee clash, that is offering a prize fund of USD 2.5 million.
