Martinez, who along with Messi won two Copa America titles and the highly coveted FIFA World Cup title in 2022 for La Albiceleste, revealed his experiences of sharing the dressing room with the Inter Miami superstar.
Argentine FIFA World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez recently revealed his experiences of sharing the dressing room with Lionel Messi. Martinez was also asked if the new players in the Argentina team feel tense while approaching Messi.
“To be fair, for the other players, maybe yes, but not for me. We are all the same, I make jokes with everyone. He has got an aura that no one has. He is someone you look up to. When you see him, whatever he does, you like to copy him. He goes to the gym, you go to the gym. He has got that aura that no one in football has,” Martinez said during a chat with the Men in Blazers YouTube channel, as per Goal.
“But for me, everyone is the same. We all joke, we have meals together. He is a lovely human being. He has a super talent and when you are born with a super talent that no one has, he is that man,” Martinez added.
Martinez has been with the Argentina team since 2021. Along with Messi, Martinez has won two Copa America titles and the highly coveted FIFA World Cup title in 2022 for La Albiceleste.
At the Qatar World Cup, the Aston Villa shot-stopper was in sublime form as Argentina went on to clinch the title having defeated 2018 champions France in the final.
Martinez won the Golden Glove award for best goalkeeper at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Following Argentina’s victory in Qatar, Martinez triggered a massive row having made an offensive gesture with the best goalkeeper’s prize.
The year 2024 proved to be a glorious one for Martinez at both the club and international level. He played a key role in helping Aston Villa to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League and confirm their berth in the Champions League.
Argentina also succeeded in winning the Copa America title this summer, with Martinez conceding one goal in the competition. The 32-year-old clinched the Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d’Or ceremony and went on to bag The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper award as well. Martinez became the first player to win The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper award twice He had claimed the award first time in 2022.
