Former Manchester United winger Antony, on loan to Real Betis, had a memorable LaLiga debut on Sunday. The Brazilian made an instant impact, creating Isco’s opener against Athletic Club.
Antony cut inside and struck a shot but his attempt was thwarted by goalkeeper Unai Simon. The Spanish goalkeeper parried the shot and the ball went to Isco who completed a simple finish to earn a lead for Real Betis.
Despite claiming the lead twice, hosts Real Betis had to settle with a point as the game ended in a 2-2 draw. But on social media, there was enough encouragement for the 24-year-old who put up an impressive show on his Real Betis debut. He won the player of the match award as well
Reacting to Antony’s performance, one X (formerly Twitter) user commented, “Antony came, saw, and got MVP in his Real Betis debut! No pressure, just casually saving the day in a 2-2 draw.”

Taking a dig at Antony’s former side, this person wrote, “Antony wasn’t the problem all along, Manchester United is the problem… the club is in shambles and yet they blame the players.”

Real Betis head coach Manuel Pellegrini was also impressed with Antony’s performance in the debut game. “Well, I think it was a very positive debut. He’s a quality player. I was talking to him just before the game. I think a good player doesn’t have to be constantly showing off his skills with the ball. He has to play a good game, make few mistakes and do two or three important things: a goal, a good pass, a good cross,” Pellegrini was quoted as saying by Manchester Evening News.
“I think he was very involved today, especially with the second goal. He had just arrived a couple of days before and I think he’s going to contribute a lot to us,” Manuel Pellegrini added.
Antony had signed for Manchester United for $95 million from Ajax in 2022. But Antony did not have a memorable spell at Old Trafford scoring 12 goals in 96 appearances. He made 14 appearances for Manchester United this season. The loan move will now keep him at Real Betis for the remainder of the season.
