India had a good day at the office on Wednesday as star shuttlers PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy managed to cruise into the pre-quarters of their individual events with dominant performances. Swapnil Kusale and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar experienced varying fortunes in the Men’s Rifle 3 Position shooting event. Indian boxers had a memorable day as Lovlina breezed past her first-round opponent on the day and Nishat Dev reached the quarterfinal of his event.
Archer Deepika Kumari managed to reach the Ro16 of the women’s individual recurve event, while TT stars Sreeja Akula, and Manika Batra were ousted in the pre-quarters of the women’s singles event.
Badminton: PV Sindhu, Lakshya, Prannoy Reach Ro16!
PV Sindhu reached the pre-quarters of the women’s individual badminton event as the Indian shuttler defeated Estonian Kristin Kuuba 21-5, 21-10 in her second and last Group M match to qualify for the Round of 16.
Lakshya Sen also advanced to the pre-quarters of the men’s singles event with a statement win over third-seeded Jonathan Christie as the 22-year-old picked up a 21-18, 21-12 win over the Indonesian.
HS Prannoy got the better of Le Duc Phat of Vietnam as the veteran posted a 16-21, 21-11, 21-12 come-from-behind victory to set up a pre-quarters clash against compatriot Sen.
Shooting: Men’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions- Kusal through to final, Aishwary out!
Swapnil Kusale sealed her berth in the 50m Rifle 3 Positions Men’s Final as the 28-year-old finished 7th with 195 in standing, 197 in the prone and 198 in the kneeling rounds.
Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, who totalled 199 in kneeling, 193 in prone and 193 in standing rounds, was eliminated as he finished 11.
Table Tennis: Valiant Sreeja ousted in pre-quarters, Batra shown exit door!
Sreeja Akula booked her place in the Round of 16 of the women’s individual table tennis event with a 9-11, 12-10, 11-4, 11-5, 10-12, 12-10 win over her Singaporean opponent Jian Zeng.
However, the Indian ace came up short against the best player in the world, Yingsha Sun in the Ro16 clash as she surrendered 10-12, 10-12, 8-11, 3-11 to the Chinese paddler to bow out of the event.
Manika Batra was also shown the exit door by Miu Hirano as the Indian went down 6-11, 9-11, 14-12, 8-11, 6-11 to her Japanese opponent to bow out from the event.
Boxing: Lovlina starts strong, and Nishant reaches quarters!
Pugilist Lovlina Borgohain got her Paris 2024 campaign off in some style as she cruised past Sunniva Hofstad of Norwat in her first-round bout in dominant fashion to clinch a win by unanimous decision in the women’s 75 kg category.
Nishant Dev got the better of Ecuadorian pugilist Jose Gabriel Rodriguez Tenorio 3-2 to secure a place in the quarters of the 71 Kg Men’s boxing event.
Archery: Deepika reaches Ro16, Tarundeep ousted!
Deepika Kumari reached the pre-quarters of the women’s individual recurve with two back-to-back wins on the day. The 30-year-old kick-started her challenge with a nail-biting 6-5 triumph over Estonia’s Reena Parnat before getting the better of Dutchwoman Quinty Roeffen with ease in a 6-2 win to enter the pre-quarters.
Tarundeep Rai was shown the exit door in the men’s individual recurve by Brit Tom Hall, who clinched a 6-4 win. Hall got the beating of Rai 27-27, 28-27, 25-28, 29-28, 29-29 to move into the subsequent round of the event.
Shooting: Women’s Trap Shooting -Rajeshwari, Shreyasi out of medal contention!
Rajeshwari Kumari and Shreyasi Singh finished 22nd and 23rd places with identical scores of 113. The Indian shooters missed out on qualification to the subsequent round as only the top 6 from the qualification rounds advanced to the final of the event.
Equestrian: Dressage – Anush Agarwalla finishes ninth!
Anush Agarwalla and his horse, Sir Caramello Old were eliminated from the competition in the first stage after totalling 66.444 penalty points by the judges, which saw them finish ninth in their group.
