Animation has come a long way since its beginnings in 1892, when French inventor Charles-Émile Reynaud first revolutionised the art form.
International Animation Day (IAD) is observed on October 28 every year. Launched in 2002 by the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA), a part of UNESCO, this day is all about inspiring fresh talent and celebrating the world of animation.
Animation has come a long way since its beginnings in 1892 when French inventor Charles-Émile Reynaud revolutionised the art form. Reynaud was the first to project animated cartoons to a public audience in 1892 in Paris. Over the years, countless innovations have transformed art from simple hand-drawn sketches into today’s stunning digital masterpieces.
Now recognised in over 50 countries, International Animation Day honours the art form that continues to mesmerise audiences of all ages.
Animation comes in a variety of forms, such as stop motion, typography, 3D and traditional 2D animation. Each style brings its own unique flair and storytelling potential.
International Animation Day 2024: Theme
The theme for the 22nd edition of International Animation Day is yet to be announced. The theme for International Animation Day 2023 was “Animation: A Global Language”, focusing on the varied animation techniques in different countries and how it is a medium to unite the masses.
INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION DAY: HISTORY AND SIGNIFICANCE
Although International Animation Day was first observed in 2002, the roots of animation trace back to 1892, when the first public performance of moving pictures took place at the renowned Emile Reynaud’s Théâtre Optique in Paris.
Whenever ASIFA has the opportunity, it strives to elevate the art of animation. Over the years, this event has expanded to 50 countries. The day is significant because it connects animators with the general public, creating opportunities for collaboration.
INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION DAY 2024: THE FUTURE OF ANIMATION IN AI AND VR
Two powerful technologies — Virtual Reality (VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) — are poised to revolutionise the 3D animation industry. These advancements have the potential to significantly alter the landscape by enhancing innovation, productivity, and the overall viewing experience.

AI-powered animation
Artificial intelligence is now a valuable tool for 3D animators rather than just a concept from science fiction. With AI algorithms capable of analysing large animation datasets, creators can automate certain steps in the animation process. This maintains high standards of quality while dramatically reducing production time and costs.
AI can generate or enhance facial expressions, character movements, and even voiceovers, allowing animators to focus on more creative aspects.
In addition, AI enables more realistic physics simulations, which are crucial in fields such as virtual reality and gaming. As a result, users can enjoy a more immersive experience, with characters and objects interacting with their virtual environments more authentically and accurately.

Using VR to tell stories
While VR has already made a significant impact on entertainment and gaming, it also holds considerable promise for 3D animation. With virtual reality, animators can immerse themselves in their creations, offering a completely new approach to developing and refining 3D worlds.
This hands-on method fosters greater creativity and precision throughout the animation process.
In addition, viewers can enjoy an unprecedented level of immersion through VR. Rather than merely observing animations on screens, users can actively engage with the virtual world. This opens up exciting opportunities for interactive storytelling, training, and education.
The combination of VR and AI
The possibilities for innovation are boundless when AI and VR technologies converge. AI can enhance VR experiences by generating dynamic and responsive environments and characters. This integration allows narratives to evolve in real-time based on user interactions, increasing adaptability and personalisation.
The exciting fusion of AI and VR technology represents the future of 3D animation. As these technologies become more widely available and refined, we can anticipate a creative explosion within the industry.
