Jeakson Singh saw red as Odisha FC defeated East Bengal FC 2-1 in the 2024-25 Indian Super League.
Odisha FC pipped 10-man East Bengal FC 2-1 in the 2024-25 Indian Super League at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Thursday.
Jerry Mawihmingthanga and Hugo Boumous scored after Lal Chununga’s opener.
The initial exchanges promised a game would be played in either penalty box but soon it dissolved into a mid-field battle even before the 10-minute mark.
Thoiba Singh and Jeakson Singh also went into the referee’s book for silly fouls. Madih Talal went down after twisting his foot and despite trying to shake off the injury, had to be stretched off as Nandhakumar Sekar replaced him.
And it was Nanda who got the first shot on target for East Bengal in the 24th minute after cutting in on his stronger foot from the right. Hugo Boumous and Diego Mauricio had tried their luck at the other end, without success.
The promised end-to-end action finally materialised in the 35th minute.
Cleiton Silva slipped in PV Vishnu, who in turn, passed in for Naorem Mahesh Singh but the Indian forward missed his footing and the chance as Odisha sprung the counter. Isak Vanlalruatfela set Boumous free, who dinked a ball over as Jerry Mawihmingthanga thundered his header across the crossbar.
Barely minutes later, Isak’s hot from the edge of the box rattled the crossbar again.
Boumous almost scored in the 40th minute when he sheepishly touched on a corner from Ahmed Jahouh only to be saved by an instinctively by Prabhsukhan Singh Gill.
East Bengal’s troubles compounded in the 43rd minute as Jeakson was sent off with a second yellow card for elbowing Diego Mauricio while trying to shield the ball.
After the restart, East Bengal was pushed forward for the opener. In the 53rd minute, Lal Chungnunga found the back of the net after Hijazi Maher missed his chance from an Amrinder Singh fumble off Mahesh’s corner.
It did not take Odisha to find their reply as Jerry’s miss-kicked cross flew past a wrong-footed Prabhsukhan in the 55th.
Odisha came close in the 76th minute, just before the water break, with Rahim Ali shot straight to Prabhsukhan who had parried away Mourtada Fall’s cushioned header back.
Boumous did score just in the 81st minute as Mauricio danced past his mark from the left wing to set him up. Prabhsukhan did not stand a chance to the French-Moroccan’s left-footed strike.
Mauricio could have scored himself barely a minute later but the East Bengal keeper managed to save on his second lunge at the forward’s legs.
Even though East Bengal tried to get at least a point from the game, it was visitors Odisha FC who walked away from all three.
