Cristiano Ronaldo claimed that the Saudi Pro League is better than the French top-flight following his switch to Al Nassr, which he joined after a troubled second stint at Manchester United.
Ronaldo’s long-term rival Lionel Messi is currently plying his trade for Inter Miami having spent a couple of seasons with Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Ligue 1’s official Spanish language X (formerly Twitter) account recently reacted to Ronaldo’s comparison between the Saudi Pro League and the French top flight. The account uploaded a picture of the former PSG footballer Messi after winning the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022. “Leo Messi playing in 38 degrees,” read the caption. Along with the post, a picture of Messi holding the prized FIFA World Cup trophy was also shared on X.
The post is understood to be a cheeky dig at Ronaldo who failed to win the FIFA World Cup title in 2022 in Qatar. Messi, on the other hand, had a memorable campaign in Qatar where he led Argentina to World Cup triumph.
Earlier this week, while being interviewed at the Globe Soccer Awards, Ronaldo had said, as per GOAL, “Saudi League is better than Ligue 1. France only has PSG. The rest are finished. Try to sprint in 38, 39, 40-degree weather and see. It is difficult to become a champion in Saudi. This year Al-Hilal are better, and Al-Ittihad are top of the league, but I believe that we have to push hard to be champions. I’ve been champion everywhere I have played and I believe I will be champion in Saudi Arabia too.”
Ronaldo is currently enjoying some time away from competitive action. Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr now stand fourth in the Saudi Pro League standings after 13 games. They are 11 points behind table-toppers Al-Ittihad. In his last appearance, Ronaldo scored a goal against Al-Ittihad but it was not enough to clinch a full three points for Al-Nassr. Al-Ittihad had won that game by a margin of two goals to one.
Meanwhile, Messi is also now enjoying an off-season after the 2024 campaign with Inter Miami. Messi helped the Herons win the MLS Supporters’ Shield.
