Former World Champion and the king of chess Magnus Carlsen has found his queen, as the Norwegian tied the knot with girlfriend Ella Victoria Malone in a winter ceremony in Oslo.
As per reports from Chess.com, the couple exchanged their vows in Holmenkollen Chapel in the snowy hills of Oslo in front of close family and friends on Saturday before heading to a lavish reception at Oslo’s iconic 5-star Grand Hotel.
According to Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet, a film crew from Netflix was also present at the marriage ceremony, sparking rumours of a documentary or show in the works. As per reports, it is believed that the streaming giant is shooting a chess-related TV show rumored to air in 2025.
26-year-old Ella was born to a Norwegian mother and an American father. According to media reports, she grew up partly in Oslo, studied in the U.S., and has also spent years living in Singapore, where she is a permanent resident.
Ella and Magnus were first seen together publicly back in February 2024 at the Freestyle Chess G.O.A.T Challenge in Germany, after which they made constant appearances together in tournaments across the year.
Their marriage caps off a whirlwind couple of weeks for Carlsen, who has been making headlines after his controversial joint-World Blitz Championship win with Ian Nepomniachtchi, marking the first time in the history of the competition that the title has been shared.
Magnus is set to be back in action immediately, marked to make his debut for St. Pauli in the German Bundesliga on January 10, when he’ll face Dusseldorf led by none other than reigning World Champion GM Gukesh Dommaraju.
