Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy dismissed his air force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk. The dismissal was announced just a day after the Ukrainian military reported that an F-16 jet had crashed on August 26, killing the pilot on board. The Ukrainian president, however, didn’t give a reason for dismissal, saying that personnel must be protected. Ukraine’s General Staff said General Lieutenant Anatoliy Kryvonozhka would temporarily take over the command of the Ukrainian Air Force. The Ukrainian Air Force identified the slain F-16 pilot as Oleksiy Mes who was known by the call sign ‘Moonfish.’ Mes had trained in the US and was said to be among the six Ukrainian pilots trained to fly the F-16s.
