India’s culinary culture is far more extensive and diverse than many may think. Every corner of the country boasts at least one unique culinary treasure, firmly establishing India’s place on the global cuisine stage. And Mumbai’s recent inclusion in the top 10 food destinations worldwide is proof of that.
Time Out, a publication that covers food, leisure and entertainment, recently published a list of the 20 greatest food cities in the world. Mumbai secured the eighth spot, and the traditional vada pav was recommended as a “must-eat dish”.
“Mumbaikars are rightly proud of their city’s food scene, scoring it the highest for quality of all cities surveyed,” the report appears on Time Out’s official website.
According to the report, the city also offers a wide variety of delectable flavours, with Manchurian, butter chicken and of course, vada pav served with red and green chutneys being among the best.
Mumbai is one of 10 cities that make up this list; the other cities are Naples, which comes in first, followed by Johannesburg, Beijing, Lima, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Mumbai, Dubai and Portland.
The following is a detailed list of the 20 best food cities in the world.

Furthermore, Time Out shared an explanation of how they came up with the list, saying that it was created by asking residents of the city what the best-value bites, must-try eateries and dishes were. In addition, they had to rank the affordability and quality of the food options in their cities. To develop and rank the final listing, Time Out excluded cities with lower total scores and included the highest-scoring places from each country.
