Over 50 people were killed on August 4 as fresh protests erupted against Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Huge crowds of protesters, many with sticks, packed Dhaka’s Shahbagh Square and engaged in street battles in multiple locations and other key cities, according to police. A policeman said that Dhaka has turned into a battleground”, adding a crowd of several thousand protesters torched cars and motorcycles outside a hospital. Rallies that began in July against civil service job quotas have escalated into some of the worst unrest of Hasina’s 15-year rule.
