Ponappa and Crasto’s campaign was not an ideal one as the two were unable to register a single win in the group stages. They played the likes of South Korea, Japan and now Australia but ended their doubles campaign winless.
Their final group-stage game ended with the scorecard reading 15-21 and 10-21 in the Group C clash that took place at the La Chappelle arena on Tuesday.
The Indian pair also have the unwanted record of having the worst points difference amongst all the contenders across all the groups in the ongoing Paris Olympic Games.
In the men’s doubles event, the experienced pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty showed their class and dominated their final group-stage game with a straight-set win over the Indonesian counterparts.
They will now head into the quarterfinals where they await their opponents as the draw is yet to be conducted to see the upcoming fixtures.
In the Olympics, Manu Bhaker along with Sarabjot Singh managed to claim a bronze medal by beating the South Korean pair in the Mixed 10m Air Pistol final event for the third place to make it India’s second medal in the quadrennial event.
The Indian hockey team also managed to take the win over Ireland thanks to Harmanpreet Singh’s double strike.
