Difficult emotions can be challenging to handle. Especially, negative emotions such as resentment, anxiety and guilt can drain us physically and mentally. However, in order to understand how we can address such emotions better, we need to seek what they are trying to tell us. “Emotions are messages from your nervous system – they point to needs; they give us information. Yes, so many of us have no idea how to identify them, feel them in our bodies, understand them, or process them,” wrote therapist Rebekah Ballagh. Here are a few emotions and the needs behind them, that we should be aware of. (Unsplash)Resentment: Resentment develops from long-term frustration. However, the basic need behind resentment is usually the innate need to feel seen and heard, and to find a place of compromise, respect and equality. (Unsplash)Guilt: Guilt often arises from the state of confusion – if we should go back and set things right, or if we should move on and prioritise our own needs for the sake of our long-term self-worth. (Unsplash)Sadness: Sadness arrives after the absence of care and support in someone’s life. It sends the message that we are missing out on the need to have someone to hold onto. (Unsplash)Loneliness: The need behind the sense of loneliness is the urge to make connections, to lean on and embrace others and to have a support system. (Unsplash)Anxiety: The need of anxiety is to step into the stage of discomfort without further avoidance, and address it effectively, before it pulls us into the unending realm of overthinking.
