The Supreme Court on Friday overruled a 1967 judgement that became the basis for denying the minority status to the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). But it left it to a three-judge bench to determine afresh the minority status of the AMU based on the principles evolved in this judgement.
A seven-judge constitution bench ruled on whether the AMU enjoys minority status under Article 30 of the Constitution, which empowers religious and linguistic minorities to establish and administer educational institutions.
