Manchester United and Chelsea are exploring options to pull off a much-talked-about swap deal involving Jadon Sancho and Raheem Sterling. While a swap offer may seem a sensible option but there are plenty of obstacles that need to be overcome for the deal to take place. As per a report published by Daily Mail, one of the major obstacles is £70 million owed to Sterling in wages and bonuses for the remaining three years of his contract with Chelsea. The article went on to claim that Manchester United are keen to clear Sancho’s £250,000-a-week salary from their wage bill but they would not be interested in helping the Blues to reach a financial agreement with Sterling. Sources also pointed out that a deal would have to be finalised on Manchester United’s terms and a player swap is still an unlikely solution, as per Daily Mail.
Earlier this season, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca had said that the England duo of Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell have been training apart from the first team. As per Reuters, the Italian even said that Sterling and Chilwell may find it difficult to secure playing time if they decide to stay at Stamford Bridge.
“In this moment, they are training apart. We have a big squad, for me it’s impossible to give everyone minutes. So if they’re looking for minutes, probably it is better to leave,” Enzo Maresca had told reporters, as per Reuters.
Enzo Maresca went on to convey that Raheem Sterling was not the type of winger he had wanted for his formation. “I’m not saying he’s not a good player, but I prefer different kinds of wingers,” Maresca was quoted as saying by Reuters.
“I spoke with Raheem before Manchester City, I said that he is going to struggle to get minutes with us. With (Chilwell), I said he is a lovely guy but with his position, he’s going to struggle with us. It’s not brutal, it’s honest,” Enzo Maresca added.
Meanwhile, Manchester United have been in talks with Serie A giants Juventus over a possible transfer of Jadon Sancho. The England international returned to Manchester United this summer after having a fall-out with manager Erik ten Hag. The Premier League side would reportedly opt for a direct cash deal with Juventus. But Sancho is understood to be well aware of Chelsea’s interest and the 24-year-old may decide to return to London instead of making a switch to Italy.
As per Daily Mail, Raheem Sterling is also understood to be interested in moving back to the north-west where he had spent seven years with Manchester City.
