The fast-moving fire broke out in the Hollywood Hills on Wednesday night, threatening one of Los Angeles’ most iconic spots as firefighters battled to get under control three other major blazes that killed five people, put 130,000 people under evacuation orders and ravaged communities from the Pacific Coast to inland Pasadena.
Videos shared by the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere at Colorado State University, in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), reveal flames and towering plumes of smoke visible from space.
Satellite footage from Tuesday night captured the Palisades Fire burning through western Los Angeles County. The dramatic video showed a massive plume of smoke drifting toward the Pacific Ocean.
In another video, an overnight view from space showed the Eaton Fire, which continues to burn northeast of Altadena and Pasadena.
The latest video released by CIRA/NOAA shows both fires continuing to burn throughout Wednesday. Smoke from the Eaton Fire has spread over a significant portion of the Los Angeles metro area.
The Sunset Fire started Wednesday evening as officials were holding a news conference to update residents on efforts to fight massive fires in Pacific Palisades and Altadena and to warn that fire danger remained high. Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley made a hasty exit after announcing the new fire and soon after an evacuation order was issued.
The Hollywood Walk of Fame was bustling and the streets around the TCL Chinese Theatre and Madame Tussauds were packed with stop-and-go traffic as sirens blared and low-flying helicopters flew overhead to dump water on the flames, which were only about a mile away. People toting suitcases left hotels while some onlookers walked toward the flames, recording the fire on their phones.
