At the end of seven games in the 14-game series, Indian challenger Gukesh and Chinese champion Liren stand tied at 3.5 points each.
World Champion Ding Liren and challenger D Gukesh played out yet another draw in the seventh game of the World Chess Championship 2024 on Tuesday in Singapore.
At the midway point in the 14-game series, Gukesh and Liren stand tied at 3.5 points each.
Gukesh was on white pieces on the day, as the players alternate between the colours with each passing game, and opened with a knight move instead of the traditional pawn push.
Despite varying moves, the board stood at a point of perfect symmetry after 7 moves as the players had fortified their kings with a king-side castle by that point.
Liren plunged into deep thought early in the game and fell behind the ticker quite a bit, but demonstrated his resilience to claw his way back from tricky situations more than once in the game.
He also pushed the teenager to play a calculative game with testing moves that challenged the Indian throughout the game.
Liren demonstrated his quality to defend a game that most players would have found hard to hold on to as he pushed the game to overtime and held his concentration to eke out the draw with black pieces.
Liren’s patience and resilience paid off as he halted Gukesh’s attempts to shut the Chinese champion down.

Liren was also brave enough to push his king forward sporadically as he ended up taking it all the way to row 2 on the board during overtime.
Ultimately, a persisting pattern of the game ending in a draw in this engaging final came to pass yet again, with only games one and three yielding a winner in this summit clash for the ages.
