We are just a couple of days away from the opening match of the World Chess Championship 2024 that will pit India’s D Gukesh against China’s Ding Liren. The opening ceremony for the highly anticipated contest is scheduled to take place today (November 23). Ding is heading into what is expected to be an epic battle as the reigning world champion. He will defend his crown against the 18-year-old Indian whose career continues to blossom with every move he’s made in the past one year.
As the reigning world champion, Liren was automatically qualified to defend his title. He was crowned champion last year after defeating Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi in a marathon match. On the other hand, Gukesh earned the spot after winning the Candidates Tournament in Toronto in 2024. The Indian chess grandmaster is also the youngest-ever Candidates Tournament winner and the youngest challenger in World Chess Championship history.
This showdown between the two chess grandmasters will be a 14-game affair. A separate day has been allocated for tiebreakers if needed. Winning a game will earn either of the two one point. A draw means players will be awarded half a point each. A score of 7.5 is necessary to win the World Chess Championship title.
Gukesh and Liren have gone head-to-head thrice in classical time controls. In these three fixtures, the Chinese grandmaster has emerged victorious twice with black pieces. They last faced each other at the Sinquefield Cup. That match ended in a draw.
