Year Ender 2024: Here’s a lowdown on how denim was reinvented by leading fashion designers and brands.
Year Ender 2024: The year denim took over iconic red carpets, Instagram, and the fashion runway!
From The Denim Edit showcase at Lakme Fashion Week x FDCI 2024, Janhvi Kapoor’s channelling method dressing in denim for her film Mr & Mrs. Mahi to Kylie Minogue gracing the MET Gala 2024 red carpet Diesel denim gown, the timeless fabric became a canvas for creative craftsmanship.
Dominating the celebrity wardrobe and fashion designer mood board, denim was reinvented, upcycled, and celebrated several times in 2024.
RUNWAY DENIM
Breaking from the usual patterns and giving denim a worthy makeover, the fashion runway saw the fabric turn showstopper through an array of silhouettes and patterns. The Denim Edit showcase by the Fashion Design Council of India at Lakmē Fashion Week in partnership with FDCI was an ode to the timeless fabric denim, which was visualized by five leading Indian designers including Kanika Goyal, Dhruv Kapoor, Ashish N Soni, Countrymade and 11.11/eleven eleven.
“Denim has been a part of every wardrobe, age group, and gender making it a staple for everyone, universally. The interpretation and engaging rendition from each of the five designers gave this almost 150-year-old fabric a new look. Carving new dimensions with unique expressions—hand painted, sporty, and tailored- this show celebrated its edgy makeover,” shares Sunil Sethi, Chairman, FDCI.
UPCYCLED AND RECYCLED DENIM
On World Environment Day, Lee Cooper announced its dedicated line focused on sustainable fashion called the Lee Cooper ECO collection. As part of this initiative, they introduced jeans made from recycled cigarette butts. Similarly, R|Elan Circular Design Challenge declared the Rkive City label by Ritwik Khanna as the winner of the 6th edition. Upcycling denim has been the brand’s specialty with a research and design approach that focused on post-consumer textile waste usage. Initiatives like these help encourage young creative minds and consumers to lead a sustainable life.
RED CARPET DENIM
Being the ultimate canvas for creativity, denim is very rarely explored as a red carpet-style. However, 2024 saw the fabric make a stunning appearance. For the 2024 MET Gala, brands such as GAP and Diesel designed custom designs for celebrities Da ‘Vine Joy Randolph and Kylie Minogue.
Kylie Minogue was styled in a custom Diesel ensemble envisioned by Glen Martens. Kylie wore a devore denim tank dress inspired by a nightgown and embroidered with 500,000 crystals. Zac Posen created a voluminous custom Gap-rich indigo denim gown for Da ‘Vine Joy Randolph’s MET Gala debut. Posen creatively blended heritage with modernity, juxtaposing the structure of Gap denim with the delicate silhouette of 18th-century gowns.
CELEB CLOSET
A celebrity favourite for film promotions and public appearances, denim is no longer limited to just jeans, today celebs have explored the fabric in unique, quirky, and versatile silhouettes.
From Samantha Ruth Prabhu adorning Dhruv Kapoor’s denim bralette to Janhvi Kapoor channelling method dressing in a denim corset and pants by Jade by Monica and Karishma envisioned for her film Mr & Mrs. Mahi, celebrities have given denim a thumbs up in 2024.
DESIGNER DENIM
In 2024, fashion labels such as AFEW by Rahul Mishra, Mellowdrama, Summer Somewhere, Dwij, and Huemn, and fashion designers such as Payal Pratap, Pawan Sachdeva, and Shahin Mannan, reinvented denim through their design language and have created pieces that are not only versatile but timeless too.
