With Aman Sehrawat’s victory, wrestling has surpassed shooting, giving India seven Olympic medals (3 at the Paris Games), while hockey remains the most successful with thirteen medals.

Aman Sehrawat’s bronze in the Men’s 57kg Freestyle at the 2024 Paris Olympics has not only added another accolade to India’s Olympic history but also established wrestling as the nation’s second most successful sport at the Summer Games, with a total of eight medals. This remarkable achievement follows in the footsteps of Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav, who won Independent India’s first individual Olympic medal in wrestling at the 1952 Helsinki Games. With this victory, wrestling has surpassed shooting, giving India seven Olympic medals (3 at the Paris Games), while hockey remains the most successful with thirteen medals.

2024 Paris – Aman Sehrawat – Men’s 57kg Freestyle – Bronze

Aman Sehrawat, the lone male wrestler from India at the Paris Games lived up to his billing and claimed the bronze medal in his debut Olympic Games and in the process became the youngest medallist for India at the Games. The Indian wrestler dominated Puerto Rico’s Darien Toi Cruz to clinch the Bronze medal in the Men’s 57kg Freestyle. Aman, who suffered a crushing 10-0 loss to Japan’s Higuchi Rei previously, came back strong to dominate the Puerto Rican in a bout that ended 13-5 in favour of the Indian.

2020 Tokyo – Bajrang Punia – Men’s Freestyle 65kg – Bronze

Bajrang Punia was carrying a knee injury but he battled through the pain and disappointment of losing out on the gold medal spot to win an Olympic bronze on debut. He defeated Daulet Niyazbekov 8-0 in the bronze medal bout to emerge victorious.

2020 Tokyo – Ravi Kumar Dahiya – Men’s Freestyle 57kg – Silver

Ravi Kumar Dahiya became the second wrestler in Indian history to win an Olympic silver. He won the medal in the 57kg becoming the fifth grappler from his country to do so. The wrestler from Sonipat got off to a flying start in Tokyo. He trounced Colombia’s Oscar Tigeros (13-2) and Bulgaria’s Georgi Vangelov (14-4) by technical superiority to cruise into the semi-final. However, the place in the final almost slipped out of Ravi Kumar’s grip after Kazakhstan’s Nurislam Sanayev opened a huge 9-2 lead.

But the Indian wrestler clawed back to 9-5 by pushing the Kazakh out of the mat. With only 50 seconds remaining, Ravi Kumar executed a takedown and pinned Sanayev to win the bout by fall and advance to the final. He lost to two-time world champion Zaur Uguev of ROC in the final and settled for a silver medal.

2016 Rio de Janeiro – Sakshi Malik – Women’s Freestyle 58kg – Bronze

Gritty woman wrestler Sakshi Malik clinched bronze in the 58kg category, pulling off a sensational 8-5 victory over Aisuluu Tynybekova in the Play-off bout. The 23-year-old from Rohtak became only the fourth woman athlete from India to win an Olympic medal as she earned the dramatic win after falling behind 0-5 in the do-or-die bout. She had earlier stormed into the bronze medal play-off round with a dominating performance in her repechage round, where she thrashed Purevdorjiin Orkhon of Mongolia 12-3. Both the wrestlers matched each other in the first period and the scores were 2-2 at the break.

2012 London – Yogeshwar Dutt – Men’s Freestyle 60kg – Bronze

Yogeshwar Dutt put up a brilliant display of power-packed freestyle wrestling in the Olympic Games and won a bronze medal. Dutt clinched the bronze as he staged a brilliant rally after losing the opening round to North Korea’s Jong Myong Ri on his way to recording an emphatic 3-1 victory in the 60kg freestyle play-off. It was India’s third wrestling medal at the Olympics after Kashaba Jadhav’s bronze in the 1952 Helsinki Games and a similar feat by Sushil Kumar four years ago in Beijing. Four years, later Dutt’s bronze medal was upgraded to silver. The silver medallist from the 2012 Games – deceased Besik Kudukhov of Russia – has been stripped off his medal for using banned substance.

2012 London – Sushil Kumar – Men’s Freestyle 66kg – Silver

Sushil Kumar failed to clinch what would have been India’s only gold at London 2012, but with the silver medal in the 66kg category, Kumar became the first Indian to win back-to-back individual Olympic medals, having won a bronze at Beijing 2008. With the silver, India ended its London campaign with six medals – its best-ever show at the biggest sports extravaganza.

2008 Beijing – Sushil Kumar – Men’s Freestyle 66kg – Bronze

In the bronze medal match of 66kg freestyle event, Sushil beat Kazakhstan’s Leonid Spiridonov 3:1 and became the second Indian after Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav to win an Olympic medal in wrestling.A three-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist and a former World Wrestling Championships winner, Sushil earned most of his stripes defying the odds on the back of his iron will.

1952 Helsinki- Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav – Men’s Freestyle 57kg – Bronze

For nearly half a century he was India’s forgotten hero, but in 1952 Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav was a national icon. At the Helsinki Games, the ‘Pocket Dynamo’ became independent India’s first individual Olympic medallist when he won the freestyle wrestling bronze medal (bantamweight category).Though the men’s hockey team also returned with a gold medal, the star of the Indian contingent was Jadhav.
