Amazon’s AI push might be a struggle but the technology is slowly making its way to other platforms like Prime Video.
Ever missed a few crucial minutes in a movie or show, only to come back and find yourself lost in the storyline? Amazon Prime Video’s new feature, ‘X-Ray Recaps,’ aims to solve just that. This mew feature lets you catch up quickly on important scenes and plot points without rewinding or needing an online search for summaries.
Now, whether you’ve stepped away for a moment or are jumping back into a series after some time, X-Ray Recaps helps you stay in sync with the story, filling in the narrative gaps.
Amazon Prime Video brings this new generative AI-powered tool that is designed to keep viewers fully engaged in their shows without needing to rewind or search online for summaries. X-Ray Recaps delivers succinct, character-driven plot summaries, providing viewers with updates that match exactly where they left off — whether it’s minutes, episodes, or even entire seasons back.
X-Ray Recaps builds upon Prime Video’s existing X-Ray features, which help viewers delve deeper into what they’re watching by offering trivia and information about production details, cast, and soundtrack, among others.
Adam Gray, Vice President of Product at Prime Video, said, “Prime Video’s product and technology teams work tirelessly behind the scenes to enhance customers’ viewing experience. With the creation of X-Ray Recaps, we are directly addressing a common issue customers face when streaming content: forgetting where they left off.”
“With this context-aware functionality, Amazon Prime Video will deliver summaries of memorable moments and important plot points, allowing our customers to quickly pick up where they were or rediscover why they fell in love with a series in the first place,” Gray added.
Powered by Amazon Bedrock, X-Ray Recaps is a fully managed AWS service for building and scaling generative AI applications with foundational models. It uses a combination of custom AI models trained on Amazon SageMaker and Amazon Bedrock models to analyse video segments, subtitles, and dialogue, generating detailed descriptions of key events, locations, and conversations. This technology also includes guardrails to ensure spoiler-free and concise summaries.
Wondering how it works? Simply launch the X-Ray Recaps feature from the detail page on Prime Video or during playback via the X-Ray experience. Once selected, you can choose from different types of recaps, such as the season so far, summaries of current episodes, or the previous season.
X-Ray Recaps is currently available in beta. The company rolled out this new feature to Fire TV customers in the US on 4 November, with plans to support additional devices by the end of the year. After the launch, viewers will be able to use X-Ray Recaps on all Amazon MGM Studios original series, including Daisy Jones & The Six, The Wheel of Time, Mr & Mrs Smith, and The Boys.
