As the first and only Indian male boxer to win a world boxing championships silver medal and the former world No. 1 in the International Boxing Association’s (AIBA) 52kg category, Amit Panghal, at just 5’2″, stands tall as a giant of Indian boxing today.

Panghal scripted history back in 2019 when he became the first Indian men’s boxer to reach the final of the World Championships. Previous medal winners at the esteemed event included Vijender Singh (2009), Vikas Krishan (2011), Shiva Thapa (2015), Gaurav Bidhuri (2017) and Manish Kaushik (2019). Everyone else had settled for bronze, whereas Panghal went on to clinch a historic silver.

After suffering from a shocking first-round exit in his debut Olympics back in 2020, Panghal will now set his sights on setting things right and powering India to a medal finish.

His achievements in the realm of boxing, including gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2022 and at the Asian Championships in 2019, silver at the 2021 Asian Championships and the 2018 Commonwealth Games, to name a few, ensured that Panghal was honoured with the Arjuna Award – India’s second-highest award for sportspersons – in 2022. He is currently a junior commissioned officer in the Indian Army.

Paris Olympics Qualification

Amit Panghal secured his spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics by defeating Liu Chuang of China in a unanimous 5-0 decision during the men’s 51kg quarterfinals at the World Boxing Qualifiers in Bangkok in early June. With this, he became the second Indian male boxer to qualify for the Olympics, right after Nishant Dev (71 kg division).

Recent Performances

Amit came up as a key contender at the second boxing qualifiers this year, marking his comeback after Indian boxers failed to secure a single quota place at the Olympic qualifying event in Busto Arsizio. He replaced Deepak in the men’s 51kg event.
