Do you consume soaked almonds daily? Expert warns that excessive intake can lead to issues such as gas, kidney stones, thyroid problems, and weight gain
Almonds are considered very beneficial for health. They are not just a tasty snack, but also offer numerous health benefits. They contain monounsaturated fats, which are good for heart health. But did you know that excessive consumption can lead to health problems such as gas, kidney stones, thyroid issues, and weight gain?
Dr JP Bhagat, a well-known general physician from Godda, explained to Local18 that while soaked almonds offer numerous benefits, excessive consumption can negatively impact the digestive system. This is because almonds are rich in fibre and fat, which can lead to gas and bloating.
How Excess Consumption Of Almonds Harm
According to Dr Bhagat, almonds can also trigger allergic reactions in some individuals. These allergic responses can range from mild to severe, potentially causing long-term harm if left unchecked. Almonds contain goitrogenic compounds, which may interfere with thyroid function and lead to thyroid-related issues.
Benefits Of Consuming Almonds
Dr Bhagat also emphasises the importance of consuming almonds in moderation. Regular consumption of almonds can help reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) while maintaining good cholesterol (HDL), promoting heart health. With a low glycaemic index, almonds are ideal for managing diabetes as they prevent blood sugar spikes. Rich in antioxidants, almonds protect cells from oxidative damage, which is associated with ageing and various diseases. Furthermore, their high vitamin E content supports healthy skin and offers protection against sun damage.
While they can be part of a healthy diet, it is essential to keep their intake within recommended limits to enjoy their benefits without risking adverse effects.
