Jalebis went heavily viral in the Haryana assembly elections. The delicacy is back in headlines now with the jalebi maker who made the sweet snack for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi setting up shop outside a university in Meerut.

Tau Baljieet, who made jalebis for Rahul Gandhi during the Haryana elections, has set up a jalebi stall at Vallabhbhai Patel Agricultural University in Meerut, and it did not disappoint the students’ high expectations. A team from Local18 visited the university grounds and had a special conversation with Tau Baljeet.

While speaking with Local18, 78-year-old Baljeet revealed that he has been making jalebis for 72 years, starting at the age of six. Initially, he made normal-sized jalebis but later experimented with larger ones and created a 250-gram jalebi, something no one had made in Haryana before.

Tau Baljeet said his experiment received overwhelming response, and over time, his jalebis from Gohana, a small town in Haryana, became famous. He now sells over 100 kilograms of jalebis daily.

Famous in Political Circles

His jalebis have also gained popularity among politicians. This was evident during the Haryana assembly elections when some Congress leaders purchased jalebis from his shop for Rahul Gandhi and even took them to Delhi.

Tau Baljeet fondly recalled that Rahul Gandhi, impressed by the size of the jalebis, joked about setting up a factory. He also shared that prominent leaders like Bhupendra Hooda and Manohar Lal, among others, are fond of his jalebis.

Tau Baljeet also shared that he participates in various fairs across the country, where foreigners taste his jalebis. The snack is also sent abroad during Diwali and other festivals.

He emphasised that he takes special care in preparing the jalebis, ensuring they do not spoil for a month. Made with pure desi ghee, his jalebis costs Rs 320 per kg. Each kilogram contains only four pieces, as each jalebi weighs 250 grams.
