Over 50 people were killed in Bangladesh on August 5 as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted and protesters stormed her official residence. President Mohammed Shahabuddin ordered the release of jailed former prime minister and key opposition leader Khaleda Zia. A meeting led by Shahabuddin “decided unanimously” to free the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson”, his office said. Chiefs of the army, navy and airforce and top leaders of several opposition parties including the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami party, attended the meeting. “The meeting has also decided to free all the people who have been arrested during the student protests,” Shahabuddin’s office said.
