David de Gea made 545 appearances for Manchester United across all competitions before exiting.
Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea shared a cryptic message on social media soon after the sacking of Erik ten Hag. The Premier League club decided to part ways with Ten Hag after a 1-2 defeat to West Ham United on Sunday. The club officials were not pleased with the progress under the Dutch manager, who took over the charge in May 2022. During his two-year spell, the Red Devils won two trophies– the 2023 League Cup and the 2024 FA Cup. De Gea was part of the squad that gave Ten Hag his first title as the United boss.
The Spanish goalkeeper left the club in June 2023 as a free agent. As his successor, Manchester United later roped in Andre Onana from Inter Milan on a £47-million deal. Before his contract expiry, De Gea had reportedly extended his stay at Old Trafford.
The club officials, however, allegedly backed out of talks at the last moment. De Gea spent an entire season on the sidelines before finally signing a new deal with Serie A side Fiorentina earlier this summer.
Many fans feel Ten Hag was against keeping De Gea in his squad which led to the Spaniard’s departure.
After the news of Tan Hag’s exit came to light, De Gea dropped a pinched fingers emoji on X (formerly Twitter). The 33-year-old’s post left fans wondering if it was aimed at his ex-coach Ten Hag.
De Gea spent as many as 13 years with Manchester United. He made 545 appearances for the Premier League giants across all competitions. He was member of the Premier League triumph in the 2012-13 season and also won the Europa League in 2017.
Ten Hag has been sacked with Manchester United reeling at the 14th spot in the Premier League standings, having managed three victories and two draws in nine outings.
Manchester United have also struggled in the Europa League this season. They have so far featured in three matches in the continental tournament and secured one point on each occasion.
