A video showcasing the massive distance between the targets and competitors in archery events at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 has surprised social media users. Nearly a week after the archery events began at the Paris Olympics, a fan shared a video of the venue’s size. In the clip, the user first focuses on the participants, who can be spotted standing inside a huge circle on a dark-blue platform. The camera then slowly panned towards the targets that were located far away on another platform, towards the opposite side. Highlighting the huge gap between the two ends, the user wrote, “Anyone else’s mind blown when you realise how far away the Olympics archery target is?”

The video has now gone viral on the internet, garnering more than four million views so far. It has resulted in people flocking to the comments to share their reactions. One of them talked about how archery could be an extremely deceiving sport, as it only seemed to be easier than it really was. “I think archery is the perfect example of an ‘I could do that!’ Olympic sport when in actual fact, 99 per cent of us couldn’t even reach the target, never mind hit it,” read the response.

Another user suggested that he had a brief idea about the targets being far but, in reality, they were even more impressive. “In my mind I knew it was far, but then you see it and it’s incredible,” the comment read.

Another person suggested that the broadcasting partners for television never show the distance properly and wrote, “On TV they never show that. Wow.”

Another agreed and commented, “They should really make this more clear in the broadcast.”

A netizen jokingly said, “What!? That distance is 50x of what I imagined.”

“The target’s in a different time zone!” joked one more.

As for the distance, the archers shoot arrows at a 122-cm-wide target positioned 70 metres, or around 230 feet, away from the shooting spot. Archers use a recurve bow for the event. It has limbs that curve away from the holder when unstrung.

Indian archer Pravin Jadhav lost 0-6 to China’s Kao Wenchao in the 1/32 elimination round of the men’s individual event. Deepika Kumari and Bhajan Kaur will compete in the 1/8 elimination round of the women’s individual event on August 3.
