Vivek Ramaswamy told US-based news media outlets that he is keen on taking on the ‘regulatory state’.
Biotech entrepreneur and rising Republican young icon Vivek Ramaswamy has expressed interest in filling the Ohio Senate seat which is currently occupied by JD Vance, Donald Trump’s vice-presidential pick.
He also said that he is interested in serving in a future Trump administration Cabinet position, while speaking to US broadcaster NBC News.
“I would strongly consider it if I were asked to serve,” Ramaswamy told the broadcaster when asked of the Senate seat in Ohio which will be vacated if Donald Trump is elected US president and JD Vance is elected vice-president.
The former presidential candidate said he also wants to ‘impact the country’. “But I would also want to have a serious conversation with President Trump about the other ways I could have an impact on the country. My top passion is taking on the regulatory state,” Ramaswamy was quoted as saying by NBC at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
He said that he also spoke to the former US president regarding a possible role in his cabinet if Trump is voted to power. “We’ve talked about a lot of different possibilities, President Trump and I. I mean, we talk regularly. I spoke to him, actually most recently, it was after midnight on the night that he suffered that injury, tragedy, assassination attempt on Saturday night,” he said.
“We‘ve talked about different ideas, potentially, in a cabinet or other ways of driving change,” he added.
He said he did not discuss the issue of the Senate seat with Ohio governor Mike DeWine. “I have not discussed this with Gov. DeWine but, you know, I look forward to evaluating what the future holds in store. I would strongly consider it if asked,” he further added.
Vance began his Senate term in 2022, and should he leave office before 2028, a special election in 2026 would be held to finish the remaining two years of his term.
“But I think there are a lot of other ways to serve this country. And you know, this isn’t about what comes after victory. It is about what our path to victory is in November,” he further added.
