Manchester City’s Rodri said he is aiming to return from a serious knee injury before the end of the current campaign despite the Spanish midfielder being ruled out for the season in September.

Rodri, who won the Ballon d’Or last month, underwent surgery after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury during a 2-2 draw at Arsenal, with manager Pep Guardiola saying he would not play again this season.

“My target is to come back this season,” the 28-year-old told “The Rest is Football” podcast in an episode published on Thursday.

“I think in terms of my mentality it’s going to be positive for me to not give up the season and throw it.

“I don’t know when … my target is six, seven months, but the physios, they will dictate.”

Injury problems have beset the Mancunians since the start of the season, most notably the loss of Ballon d’Or winner Rodri for the rest of the season.

A further blow was delivered last week with news that midfielder Mateo Kovacic could be ruled out for up to a month with an undisclosed injury.

PL holders City find themselves in dire straights after their six-match winless streak across competitions, of which three losses came in the English domestic top flight.

City’s latest setback came in the UEFA Champions League as the side blew a three-goal lead at home to visiting Feyenoord, who managed a 3-3 draw at the Etihad Stadium.

City are second in the Premier League and will look to reduce the eight-point gap to Liverpool when they visit the leaders on Sunday.

Liverpool stand atop the league table with 31 points from 12 outings thus far in the season, with 9 wins and just a draw and a defeat each. Chasing City have 23 points on the board from 12 outings having won 7 of their assignments, drawn a couple and have lost the other 3.
