Sarabjot Singh has won a medal in his first ever Olympic Games after clinching bronze in the 10m air pistol mixed team event.

Sport can be cruel. Ask Sarabjot Singh who, on his Olympics debut last week, missed out on a final spot in men’s 10m Air Pistol individual event by a whisker at the Paris Games.

The Indian shooter was ninth amongst 33 athletes with a score of 577-16x (only the top-eight qualify).

Sarabjot had the same average as Robin Walter of Germany at the end of the final series but missed out because he hit one less inner 10 than his opponent.

However, sport is a great leveler.

Within three days, Sarabjot had taken a long step towards moving over that heartbreak after clinching a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team  event partnering Manu Bhaker.

The 22-year-old hails from Dheen village of Ambala, Haryana. He is the son of Jatinder Singh, a farmer and Hardeep Kaur, a homemaker.

Sarabjot was 13 and wanted to become a footballer when he spotted a few kids wielding air guns at a makeshift range during a summer camp. That sight of kids aiming at paper targets with pistols didn’t leave his mind.

In 2014, he approached his father and said, ‘Dad, I want to pursue shooting.

His father, a farmer, told his son that the sport is pretty expensive.

Sarabjot was unrelenting and insisted for months to get into shooting. Eventually, he got is wish and went on to win a gold medal at at the Junior World Championship in 2019.
