Manchester United rallied back from a goal down to beat Manchester City at the Etihad in the Premier League on Sunday as Ruben Amorim picked up a win on his debut Manchester Derby.

Josko Gvardiol’s header in the first period of the game gave City the lead, but quick strikes from Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo late in the second half gave United the win on enemy territory.

Amorim decided to start Andre Onana between the sticks with Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire as his three centre-backs in a 3-4-2-1 formation that he prefers with Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui doubling down on the flanks in defence turing into a back five essentially. Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte with in midfield with Mason Mount and Amad Diallo flanking the lone striker in Rasmus Hojlund.

Guardiola, who had just one win in his last 10 games across all competitions, opted to field Ederson in gal behind the defensive three of Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, and Josko Gvardiol. Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva were in the middle of the par with Jeremy Doku and Matheus Nunes on either wing. Kevin De Bruyne was paired with Phil Foden in advance midfield roles with Erling Haaland playing up front.

Mount had to endure an early change as he suffered from discomfort and Kobbie Mainoo was brought in as his replacement 12 minutes into the game.

City, who had seen more of the ball than United in the first period of the game ventured forward time and again but with no end product to show for it as Foden went close to opening the scoring with a half-volley from outside the box which went just wide.

City defender Gvardiol, who seems to have found a rich goalscoring vein, was once again in the thick of things as he headed the ball into the net as a bit of fortune sent the ball looping high up into the centre of the area following a corner routine by the hosts, as De Bruyne’s cross into the box after a quick exchange took a nick off Diallo’s boot before the Croat rose highest to send the Etihad into a loud cheer.

Diallo made Ederson work a save up in the second half with a header for United’s first shot on target, before Fernandes scuffed a one-on-one chance against Ederson as he tried to dink it past the rushing keeper only to put it wide.

However, United were awarded a penalty for Nunes’ foul on Diallo inside the area, whih Ferandes stepped up to convert to restore parity.

United turned the game on its head four minutes after the leveller as Diallo did incredibly welL to latch onto a long ball in before finishing exquisitely from a tight angle to stun the home crowd into silence.
