Renowned Bhojpuri singer Sharda Sinha, celebrated for her contributions to Bollywood and her soulful renditions during the Chhath festival, is currently facing a grave health challenge. Admitted to the Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital at AIIMS, New Delhi, Sinha is on oxygen support as she battles multiple myeloma, a serious form of blood cancer. Having been diagnosed with this illness in 2018, Sinha has been undergoing treatment and is now fighting for her life.

What is Multiple Myeloma?

Dr Ajay Gogia, an Additional Professor in the Department of Medical Oncology at AIIMS, explains that multiple myeloma, often categorised as a B cell malignancy, primarily affects the blood cells and bone marrow. In this condition, B cells begin to function abnormally, leading to various health complications. Patients often report symptoms such as severe back or waist pain, renal failure, and respiratory infections.

Symptoms of Multiple Myeloma

Key symptoms associated with multiple myeloma include:

  • Severe pain in the spine, hips, or chest
  • Constipation
  • Nausea and vomitting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Mental fog or confusion
  • Fatigue
  • Significant weight loss

Diagnosis and Risk Assessment

Diagnosis of multiple myeloma typically involves blood tests and bone marrow examinations, which help determine the stage of the disease and the risks associated with specific symptoms, such as spinal pain or renal issues. These assessments enable doctors to categorise patients based on their risk levels, which informs their treatment plans.

The Severity of the Disease

Multiple myeloma is recognised as a particularly dangerous form of cancer. Its prognosis largely depends on the patient’s age and the stage at which the cancer is diagnosed. According to Dr Gogia, survival rates indicate that approximately 40% to 82% of patients live for about five years post-diagnosis. Roughly 85% of patients survive for one year, while about 55% make it to the five-year mark. Early diagnosis can improve outcomes significantly, with about 30% of patients living for ten years or more.

Treatment Options

While multiple myeloma cannot be completely cured, timely identification and treatment can help manage symptoms and control the disease. Dr Gogia said that patients under 60 may be eligible for bone marrow transplants at AIIMS, followed by two years of maintenance therapy. For patients over 65, who may have multiple health issues, a tailored maintenance plan is also developed.

ICU Considerations and Prognosis

Typically, multiple myeloma affects older individuals, with the average patient being over 50. Dr Gogia explained that the youngest patient treated for myeloma at AIIMS was just 16. When it comes to patients requiring ICU care, particularly for chest infections, survival depends on effective infection management. This is the case for Sharda Sinha, who is currently fighting against such complications.

As the Chhath festival approaches, fans and well-wishers are hopeful for Sinha’s recovery, looking forward to her return to the stage and the community that holds her in such high esteem. The coming weeks will be crucial as her medical team continues to navigate the complexities of her treatment and health.
