Transfer News: Ivan Rakitic signed with Hajduk Split (X)

Ivan Rakitic signed with Hajduk Split after cancelling his agreement with Al-Shabab as Newcastle United roped in Miodrag Pivas from Jedinstvo Ub.

Former Croatian international midfielder Ivan Rakitic has signed with Hajduk Split, the club announced Sunday.

Rakitic who arrives after cancelling his agreement with Saudi side Al-Shabab, will play for Hajduk for the next season.

“One of the best players in the history of Croatian football minutes before midnight has signed an agreement with Hajduk until the end of the season with an option for further extension of one season”, Hajduk Split announced on its web-site.

Rakitic, who by Hajduk is presented as the most decorated player in the Croatian league, will be officially presented on Sunday night at a press-conference in Split.

The 36-year-old started his career in Basel, Switzerland, later playing for Germany’s Schalke 04 and Sevilla and Barcelona in Spain.

He won the UEFA Champions League with Barcelona and the Europa League twice with Sevilla.

He made 106 appearances for Croatia playing a key role in winning the silver medal at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Magpies Sign Teenage Defender

Newcastle United have signed 19-year-old defender Miodrag Pivas from Serbian side Jedinstvo Ub, the Premier League club said on Saturday.

The Serbia youth international, who can also play as a box-to-box midfielder, spent most of his youth career in Austria, playing for Siezenheim and Grodig, before joining Jedinstvo last year.

“Miodrag is a promising talent with high potential,” Newcastle’s CEO Darren Eales said in a statement. “I see the project of the club and it looks great which helped convince me to sign for Newcastle,” Pivas said.

The Magpies start their league campaign against promoted side Southampton on Aug. 17.

Meunier Joins Lille

Belgium defender Thomas Meunier has joined Lille on a two-year contract, the Ligue 1 club said on Friday.

Meunier, 32, had joined Turkish side Trabzonspor in February from Borussia Dortmund. He previously won the Ligue 1 title three times with Paris St Germain and was in the Belgium squad that finished third at the 2018 World Cup.

“Lille was the perfect choice from a sporting and family point of view. With its proximity to Belgium, it’s like being at home,” Meunier said in a statement.

“My experience in the various European Cups will enable me to coach the youngest members of the dressing room and ensure that they’re 100% focused on the club’s sporting success.”

Lille will be in the Champions League qualifiers after finishing fourth in Ligue 1 last season. They begin their league campaign at Reims on Aug. 18.
