Manchester United are gearing up for a fresh start under new boss Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach has succeeded Erik Ten Hag to secure the managerial job at Old Trafford. His arrival was confirmed on November 1 but Amorim had to serve a notice period at his former club Sporting Lisbon before shifting his base to Manchester. The Red Devils underwent their first training session under their new manager on November 18. Amorim didn’t have the entire team at the Carrington, with several first-team stars out on international duty.
Players like Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo, Casemiro, Luke Shaw and Leny Yoro have already rejoined the club after serving their respective national teams. They all were available for the first practice session under Amorim. The 39-year-old manager oversaw some drill training before setting up an intra-squad friendly to evaluate the understanding between his players, as reported by Daily Mail.
During his time at Sporting Lisbon, Amorim had mostly used a 3-4-3 formation, allowing his midfielders to control the game. His strategy remained the same in the practice match at Carrington. Manchester United dropped some glimpses of the intense training session on X (formerly Twitter).
Once the footage surfaced on the internet, an eagle-eyed fan was able to notice that Amorim had built one team with the top players who went head-to-head against an inexperienced, young side.
According to the user, the first team had a three-man defence featuring the likes of Yoro, Evans and Shaw. The midfield seemingly had Antony, Casemiro, Mainoo and Tyrell Malacia while the forward line was composed of Amad Diallo, Rashford and Mason Mount.
Manchester Evening News claimed that 16-year-old defender Godwill Kukonki was part of Amorim’s training session. A product of the United academy, Kukonki is a key component of the club’s U-18 team which has conceded just four goals in nine games in the age-group Premier League.
With Amorim seeking agility and physical strength in his backline, Kukonki expects to make his debut for the senior team soon. Manchester United currently need a defender to fill the vacant space of Victor Lindelof who sustained an injury while playing for Sweden during the recent international break.
Amorim’s first match as the Manchester United manager is scheduled for November 24 when the Red Devils take on Ipswitch Town in a Premier League game away from home.
