Shearer asserted that Tuchel needs to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the current crop of English players oozing in ability, but acknowledged it would be a different kind of test for the former Chelsea boss.
The FA announced that Geman coach Thomas Tuchel would take over the duties as England’s gaffer starting in the year 2025 bringing an end to the Three Lions’ search for a full-time manager following the departure of Gareth Southgate, who stepped down from duties as the English head coach following a Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.
England are yet to win a major trophy since their only previous success all the way back in the year 1966 when they clinched the World Cup at home, and legendary striker Alan Shearer reiterated the necessity to win a major event.
Searer asserted that Tuchel needs to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the current crop of English players oozing in ability, but acknowledged it would be a different kind of test for the former Chelsea boss.
“We need a trophy — it’s as simple as that. We need a manager who can deliver that,” Shearer said.
“There’s no doubt Tuchel has an incredible CV, but this is going to be a very different test for him,” he added.
“It’s a bold move from the FA, there’s no doubt about it,” Shearer continued.
“You have to win the tournament, that’s what he’s been hired for. The FA have seen the bunch of players are the best England have had for a long, long time,” the all-time Premier League top-scorer said.
Lee Carsley stepped in to fill the void left by his compatriot and managed some positive results with the English side, but the FA opted to bring in a proven winner in Tuchel, who has managed to clinch the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea, the Bundesliga crown with Bayern Munich and the Ligue 1 title with PSG in the past.
Former England striker Gary Linekar said TUchel would be rubbing his hands citing the abundance of talent and potential available in the Three Lions’ unit including the likes of Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka among others.
“Tuchel will have looked at this squad and thought there is so much talent in there, this is an unbelievable opportunity of winning the greatest trophy of all,” Lineker said.
Lineker also mentioned that he would have liked it had the FA opted to give the full-time role to Carsley following his entertaining expeditions at the helm of the English side.
“I would have given the job to Carsley. I have seen enough to suggest the players really trust him, that he’s imaginative enough to produce something that is a joy to watch — entertaining front-footed football.”
Tuchel is set to take the reins of the English side in January of next year, permitting Carsley to helm the English side for their UEFA Nations League games later in the year against Greece and Ireland in November.
Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards touched up on the derth in quality English managers and was glad the FA decided to hand the coveted role to the 51-year-old German.
“The point is we don’t have an English candidate strong enough to take that job,” opined Richards.
“I was of the opinion that we don’t need an English manager, just go out and get the best person for the job. I think Tuchel is an outstanding manager, a proven winner,” the defender added.
