As the first man to embrace Islam, he played a key role in supporting Prophet Muhammad and spreading the message of the religion. It is believed that Hazrat Ali was the son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad and his birth is honoured by Muslims around the world as a time to reflect on his legacy.
Hazrat Ali’s Birthday: History
Hazrat Ali is believed to have been born in Mecca on the 13th day of the Islamic month of Rajab, in 599 AD, to Abu Talib and Fatima bint Asad. He was the cousin of Prophet Muhammad and fought alongside him in many battles.
Hazrat Ali later married Muhammad’s daughter, Fatimah. He is also considered the first male to accept Islam. Following the demise of Prophet Muhammad in 656 AD, the mantle of leadership was passed to Hazrat Ali.
He ruled until 661 AD when he was fatally struck by a poisoned sword while praying at the Great Mosque of Kufa.
His injuries led to his martyrdom on the 19th day of Ramadan. Both Shia and Sunni Muslims hold Hazrat Ali in high regard, though their perspectives on his leadership differ.
